York University Students Statistics: Enrolment, Faculties and Outcomes

York University student statistics covering enrolment, international students, faculties, tuition, graduation and employment outcomes.

York University reported more than 53,000 students across more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in its 2025 President’s Report. Its earlier institutional profile recorded 52,791 students by headcount and 47,031 full-time-equivalent (FTE) students in 2022/23. These measures are not interchangeable: headcount counts people, while FTE adjusts enrolment to a full-time study equivalent.

University size and academic structure

York’s reported size depends on the year, measure and publication. The 2025 President’s Report described more than 53,000 students and more than 9,600 international students from 178 countries. The 2022/23 institutional profile provides a more detailed baseline: 52,791 students by headcount and 47,031 FTE students.

The same 2022/23 profile counted 10 faculties, 135 undergraduate programs and 121 graduate programs. It also listed 21 campuses. Because the 2025 figure and the 2022/23 figure use different reporting periods and may use different counting conventions, they should be read as separate institutional snapshots rather than as a precise growth calculation.

Undergraduate and graduate enrolment

York’s end-of-year enrolment report shows how undergraduate FTE changed between 2015 and 2024. Undergraduate eligible enrolment was 36,247 fiscal FTE in 2015 and 36,950 in 2024, with Markham Campus excluded from the 2024 figure. Undergraduate ineligible-visa enrolment rose from 4,409 fiscal FTE in 2015 to 5,000 in 2024. Total undergraduate enrolment was 41,950 fiscal FTE in 2024, also excluding Markham Campus.

The report’s year-over-year comparison uses 2024–25 against 2023–24. Total undergraduate fiscal FTE was 1.5% lower. Within that total, eligible undergraduate FTE was 1.3% higher, while visa undergraduate FTE was 18.2% lower. This combination indicates that the overall movement was not uniform across enrolment categories.

Graduate enrolment followed a similar mixed pattern. Total graduate enrolment was 0.4% lower in 2024–25 than in 2023–24 on an FTE basis. Eligible graduate enrolment was 7.3% higher, while visa graduate enrolment was 17.2% lower. These are reported percentage changes, not forecasts, and refer to fiscal FTE rather than a simple student headcount.

Domestic and international students

York’s preliminary survey of 2024–25 enrolment provides estimated full-time registered headcounts for November 1, 2024. It recorded 35,526 domestic full-time undergraduates and 5,042 international full-time undergraduates in the ineligible-only category, for 40,568 full-time undergraduates in total.

At graduate level, the survey recorded 3,374 domestic full-time students and 1,234 international full-time students in the ineligible-only category, for 4,608 full-time graduate students in total. The “ineligible-only” category is the survey’s classification and should not be treated as a universal count of every possible international enrolment status.

The survey estimated that York represented 9.1% of Ontario’s full-time undergraduate sector and 6.0% of the province’s full-time graduate sector in 2024. These are estimated sector shares measured at the same November 1 date, rather than York’s share of all university students in every study mode.

The 2022/23 institutional profile recorded 8,832 international students by headcount and said international students represented 18% of York’s FTE enrolment. Among international students in that profile, 3,618 were from China, representing 41.0%, and 1,444 were from India, representing 16.3%.

The two sources use different dates and measures: the November 1, 2024 survey reports estimated full-time registered headcount, while the 2022/23 profile reports headcount and an FTE share. They should not be combined into one trend line.

Faculties and campus enrolment

The 2022/23 profile allocated York’s 47,031 FTE enrolment across its academic units. Liberal Arts and Professional Studies was the largest, with 17,660 FTE, or 38% of the total. The Faculty of Health followed with 9,724 FTE, or 21%.

Lassonde School of Engineering accounted for 4,449 FTE, or 10%, and the Faculty of Science accounted for 4,211 FTE, or 9%. Schulich School of Business had 2,924 FTE, or 6%, while the Faculty of Arts, Media, Performance and Design had 2,537 FTE, or 5%.

The remaining reported units were smaller by FTE share. The Faculty of Education had 2,076 FTE, or 4%; Osgoode Hall Law School had 1,403 FTE, or 3%; Glendon had 1,396 FTE, or 3%; and Environmental and Urban Change had 651 FTE, or 1%.

These percentages are the profile’s reported shares and are rounded. The FTE figures are therefore the more precise comparison when assessing the relative size of faculties.

Graduation and program demand

For the 2014 cohort, York’s overall graduation rate was 70.7% when measured within seven years, with the outcome measured in 2021. Rates varied by field. Business and commerce recorded 79.3%, engineering 67.9%, computer science 56.3% and mathematics 51.1%. Law recorded 98.6% for the same cohort and measurement window.

These figures describe the specified 2014 cohort and a seven-year outcome measured in 2021. They are not a current graduation forecast and should not be interpreted as the expected result for every student or program.

Program size also varied considerably in 2022/23. Fifty of York’s 135 undergraduate programs had 50 or fewer students, and 31 had 20 or fewer students. Between 2018/19 and 2022/23, enrolment decreased by at least 10% in 58 of the 135 undergraduate programs. York discontinued 22 undergraduate programs between 2016 and 2023.

Together, these figures show a broad undergraduate portfolio with both large enrolment centres and many small programs. The program counts and changes describe York’s reported institutional position; they do not by themselves explain why individual programs grew, contracted or were discontinued.

Tuition and post-graduation indicators

Average 2022/23 undergraduate domestic tuition at York was $7,245, compared with $32,962 for international undergraduates. At graduate level, average domestic tuition was $6,648 and average international tuition was $29,959. These are average tuition figures for 2022/23, not a universal price for every program, course load or student.

The same institutional profile reported an 84.8% graduate employment rate in a related field in 2022/23. It also reported employment earnings of $51,548 for York graduates in the 2022/23 Strategic Mandate Agreement metrics.

The employment rate and earnings figure measure different things: one is the share employed in a related field, while the other is an earnings indicator. The supplied figures do not establish that tuition caused a particular employment outcome, nor do they provide a program-by-program earnings breakdown.
